This is a traditional mincemeat that contains real meat – steak and suet.  It makes superb mince pies.  The quantities will make enough to last for about 5 or more years and it does not go off over that time.  It may, however, be desirable to add some more brandy after a year or so.

Preparation Time: 1 Hr

Ingredients

1 kg                  Apples  - cooking - peeled and chopped

230 gms             Beef  - stewing     

80 ml                 Brandy   

110 gms             Candied peel        

450 gms             Currants

1                      Lemon  - juice and grated rind of        

¼ tsp                Mixed spice         

½ tsp                Nutmeg  

230 gms             Raisins   

230 gms             Suet      

450 gms             Sugar  - dark brown

450 gms             Sultanas

Method

Mince together all the ingredients (including the sultanas) except the currants.  Mix in the currants.

Keep for as long as possible in a glass preserving jar or plastic container.
